Tabb Middle School is a great place for sports. It has plenty of them and they are very fun to play. Sorry you sixth graders, you can’t play until you’re in 7th grade. Anyway I would just like to tell you guys a little about the Boy’s Basketball Team.

Basketball is a fun, exciting and amazing sport to play. You don’t have to be good to tryout as long as you are trying you’re hardest overall. In this game there are two teams. They are supposed to score baskets at the opposite goalpost. I recommend playing this game if you are just starting a sport because it is easy to understand and it is very fun. You can also make a lot of new friends while being involved with this activity. Another reason why I think you should play it is because you get to learn some sportsmanship. You can’t go anywhere if you don’t have sportsmanship.

This sport will be availible to 7th and 8th graders next year if you want to try out. The tryouts are in November and they practice everyday after school. The games don’t start until later in November though. If you would like to watch home games they are located in the Auxillary Gym and the Main Gym. Boy’s Basketball is an amazing sport and I think you should try it out this year at Tabb Middle School.

On Thursday November 24th, 2011, most families were together. Why you say? Well that day was Thanksgiving, and on Thanksgiving families gather together. When they do they have a variety of foods. For example, the main course is usually turkey. They even cook it all day long so it tastes delicious. Other foods might be green beans, broccoli casserole, and stuffing. On the dessert menu there might be any types of pies or puddings.

Long ago, the pilgrims invited certain Indian tribes to a feast. The reason for the feast was to celebrate the peace between these two groups. Today the “feast” is now called Thanksgiving. The pilgrims were thankful for the Indians and vice versa. This day only happens on the last Thursday of November. Many families have set traditions for each year this happens.

Celyse Hernandez, a seventh grader, said “A tradition in my family is that we pass a video recorder around and tell it the one thing we are most thankful for.” To conclude, I think this holiday should be appreciated, but not skipped over like nothing. Remind your family that you love them and are thankful for them all of the time, but especially on Turkey Day!

All around the world Christians celebrate this special holiday by giving and sharing gifts with one another. Usually people have a big Christmas dinner. Courtney Fiest says, “My favorite part about Christmas is sitting around the table sharing my dinner with family and friends.”

Hanukkah, celebrated by the Jewish, starts at sunset on December 20th and ends at sunset on December 28th. This holiday is celebrated to remember the military victory over Greeks and the miracle of a small amount of oil lasting eight days. Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and every night you light a new candle and exchange gifts with one another.

The last December holiday is Kwanzaa, which is celebrated by Africans. Kwanzaa begins December 26th and ends January 1st. It is celebrated for African Americans to reaffirm their ancestors and culture. During this long holiday you light a candle every night that symbolizes different things. Also you have a huge feast with family and friends.

Do you want a fun and history-filled adventure? If you do, then you should head west on Interstate 64 and go to Historic Jamestown! There you will find a beautiful facility packed with activities for all ages. It is relatively inexpensive if you are a York county resident or a member of the military. Also, there are many helpful tour guides available to answer all of your questions.

There are five main exhibits. They are the James Fort, The Gallery, The Movie, The Three Ships, and the Indian Village. The James Fort was built for the protection of the King James River, and it was built to protect the colonists from the Indians. The Gallery displays multiple paintings of the Fort and it’s surrounding areas. The “New World” movie is about 15-20 minutes, and explains the relationship of the settlers and the Indians. It also discusses the value of the Fort, and what the future of it may hold. The Three Ships are The Susan Constant, The Godspeed, and The Discovery. They are replicas that show how the settlers lived on the ship on their way to Jamestown. The Indian Village has many teepees that are filled with animal skins and food. It explains how hard the Indian life was during that time period.

One of our own TMS 7th grade history teachers, Mr. Kilburn, has recently visited Historic Jamestown. He especially liked the glass house near the entrance because he enjoyed watching the glassmakers work and seeing the finished product. Mr. Kilburn says “I definitely recommend Jamestown to anyone who is interested in American History.” There are so many great reasons to visit Jamestown. And if you do, you won’t regret it!

The winner of the canned food drive will get a free ice cream at lunch. Some of the food has already been given away for Thanksgiving. It is important that we do this, so other people can have nice meals and food to eat. Morgan Spruill says, “It is important, because it gives people food if they are poor.”

All students should participate when we have drives like this one, because it is important that we reach out to everyone in any way that we can.

On the 18th of November 7th & 8th grade students attended a dance at Tabb Middle School. The dance officially started at 7:00 P.M. and ended at 9:00 that evening. The admission fee to get into the dance was $5:00. Some students just hung out with friends in the cafeteria while others danced in the wildly lit gymnasium with stunning strobe lights! They danced to popular tunes supplied by the DJ.

In the Tiger Café, the PTA sold beverages and snacks. 7th and 8th graders also showed their Tabb pride by buying Tabb merchandise. An 8th grade student, Bianca Dust stated “School dances are important because they help students socialize and escape from the daily stresses of school.” Different students attend the dances for various reasons. No matter what their reasons, Tabb dances will almost always leave you with a smile on your face!

As we all know, Tabb held a fundraiser supported by Great American. We sold cool things like magazines, cookie dough, wrapping paper, and jewelry. As a reward, they asked the Miami Heat Dunk Team to come and perform for those who sold 15 or more items. The gym was slam packed! Kids filled up the entire thing of bleachers and more! A lot of them had to sit on the floor.

“I may have been sitting on the floor,” Says Connor Nickol, a 6th Grader, “but I still had a whole lot of fun watching it.” Little Willy is apparently the best of the best. His co-workers were great, but he was amazing. He could fly through the air after just a quick bounce on that small trampoline.

The X-treme Dunk Team took members from the audience to participate in a single bounce and shoot contest. It was boys vs. girls. Not a single one of them scored, but they all had the biggest smiles you’ve ever seen. Than Little Willy pumped up the already rowdy crowd by asking Mrs.Rhew, our very own principal, to hold the ball up for Little Willy to grab and dunk. She had to stand on a crate to be tall enough. With her eyes bravely closed, she held the ball above her head as high as her arms could stretch. Little Willy began his run from the opposite basket, jumped, grabbed the ball, and dunked! What an amazing feat it was.

”I was so awed at how the performers could just; fly through the air, almost defying gravity,” Grace Fotis said. She also told me if they had another show, she would definitely attend for a second time. The crowd was very thankful Mr.Page had worked with a representative from Great American to get this show to happen. The Miami X-treme Dunkers truly showed us the heat when they burned up the court with their skills.

That’s how I became a horseback rider. Never been close to a horse? That’s no problem at all. All of the local barns accept beginners. It’s not hard to get started either!

Well first of all, you have to find a barn you like. I keep my horse at Gentle Touch Stables. I can tell you they are amazing at teaching beginners. But I’ve also been to Yorktown Stables, Amazing Grace Stables, and Topline. They all have websites you can check out! It’s easy to get started, all you have to do is call for information, or send them an email. Everyone is so friendly. Also, you can expect someone to be there almost every day of the week! Most are opened Monday through Saturday.

Some of you may be wondering what is horseback riding like. I can tell you from personal experience that it is such a cool feeling being on top of a horse. Having a connection with a 1,200 pound animal is something most people will never experience. “I love riding! It’s an amazing feeling to have a connection with the horse your on,” says Lauren Cook who rides at Yorktown Stables. Not only that, but it’s also exhilarating. When you ride long enough, you get to jump. It’s so much fun going over a course of three foot jumps. You almost feel like your flying. But horse riding is a lot more than just fun. It builds up confidence. Well obviously it takes some bravery to hop on a six foot tall horse! Riding also teaches you good posture. You don’t find many riders that slouch. Leg muscle also builds up over time. How do you think you stay on a horse at a gallop or over a jump? You’ve got to have some leg strength to do those things. Finally, horse riding teaches you responsibility. Horses are nothing but big toddlers that need to be given food and care. Believe me, horses are worth every moment spent. So don’t be afraid to ask for lessons! You won’t regret it.

Creating a bond with your horse is an important part of riding.

On the first day of each year, we celebrate New Year’s Day. People celebrate this holiday by staying up until midnight on December 31st, New Year’s Eve. Normally, people play party games on New Year’s Day; they also watch concerts in the early morning. There are also a lot of cool stunts on January 1st.

Every year, in every time zone, a New Year’s ball drops from the top of a building, or something. When the giant, heavy glass ball stops moving, it lights up. When it lights up, the New Year has begun. For the eastern US the ball drops in New York City, hosted by a man named Dick Clark.

“My New Year’s resolution is to be kind to everyone, no matter what they are like,” Laura Fortune said. Many people do make New Year’s resolutions. These are things that they are going to try to do better at for the upcoming year. You can make your own resolution too. You might want to try to get A’s and B’s in the third quarter, or be more trustworthy.

New Year’s Day is clearly an awesome day. It doesn’t matter what you religion, or nationality is, New Year’s Day is for everyone. Find your family, play some games, and watch that ball drop!
